Mikrodius works with any device that can log users in over RADIUS: MikroTik, but also access points, BNGs and captive portals from other vendors. When you add a NAS you pick its Vendor. If your device is not in the list, choose Other / Generic.
What the vendor setting does
The vendor decides only two things:
- Whether you get a one-line install command. Only MikroTik has one. For every other vendor you set up the tunnel and RADIUS on the device by hand, using the values in the NAS's Config.
- Which RADIUS attributes carry a plan's download and upload speed. Every vendor names them differently.
Everything else works the same on every device: login checks, expiry, data and time limits, concurrent session limits, accounting and webhooks.
Vendors with their own entry
| Vendor | Plan speed is sent as |
|---|---|
| MikroTik RouterOS | Mikrotik-Rate-Limit, including burst. Speed changes reach online subscribers right away. |
| Ubiquiti EdgeOS / UniFi, pfSense captive portal | WISPr-Bandwidth-Max-Up and WISPr-Bandwidth-Max-Down |
| Cisco IOS | Cisco-AVPair with a rate limit |
| Huawei BNG / AR | Huawei-Input-Average-Rate and Huawei-Output-Average-Rate |
| CoovaChilli / OpenWrt | ChilliSpot-Bandwidth-Max-Up and ChilliSpot-Bandwidth-Max-Down |
| accel-ppp (Linux BNG) | Filter-Id as download/upload in kbps |
| Juniper MX / ERX, Ruijie Reyee | Nothing. Set the speed with the device's own attributes (see below). |
On every vendor except MikroTik, changing a subscriber's speed disconnects their session; the device reconnects and picks up the new speed. The device must accept RADIUS disconnect requests (RFC 5176) for this, and for suspending or disconnecting a subscriber from the dashboard.
Any other RADIUS device
Choose Other / Generic for Aruba, Ruckus, Fortinet, TP-Link Omada, Cambium and any other RADIUS client. Logins, limits and accounting work as usual; only the plan speed is not sent, because Mikrodius does not know which attribute your device reads.
To limit speed, add the device's own attribute to the plan under Custom RADIUS Reply Attributes. Many devices apply speed through a role or group you set up on the device, for example Aruba-User-Role, Ruckus-User-Groups or Fortinet-Group-Name. Check your device's RADIUS documentation for the attribute it uses.
Vendor attributes in plans
A plan can send attributes from about 185 vendor dictionaries (the same ones FreeRADIUS ships), on any NAS. In the plan editor, Add Attribute and search by name or vendor; the value is checked against the attribute's type before you save. See Plans.
Attributes that Mikrodius sets itself from the plan (speed, session and idle timeout, address pools, static IP) cannot be added this way, so the two cannot disagree.
Limits
- Burst is MikroTik only. Other vendors ignore the burst settings.
- Ubiquiti and Ruijie publish no RADIUS dictionary, so there are no attributes of theirs to pick.
